Personal liability
Injury to someone else or damage to their belongings can have financial consequences. Personal liability insurance concerns certain liability risks in your private life.
A mistake and legal liability are different things
Damage can occur without you being legally liable. Even when you feel responsible, liability and cover are not determined by that feeling alone. The circumstances and policy terms must be assessed. Insurance therefore does not automatically pay for every loss you cause, experience or voluntarily wish to reimburse. Keep those distinctions in mind when discussing a claim.
Who is covered by the policy?
The make-up of your household is an important starting point. Do you live alone or with others, do you have children, and have your circumstances changed? The policy describes who is insured and in which circumstances. Specific arrangements may also apply to children living away from home or pets, for example. Check the description rather than relying on a general family label.
Report changes to your household promptly. This website makes no statement about cover for a specific person or event.
No replacement for other liability insurance
Personal liability is not the same as motor liability cover. Damage connected with a profession or business must also be considered separately. A personal policy is not general cover for every activity. Explain the role and circumstances in which a risk or loss arises. This allows the question to be directed to the appropriate policy or specialist.
- Which people and private circumstances does the policy describe?
- What sum insured and excess apply?
- Which exclusions or special agreements are included?
- Is the activity actually a private one?
Liability cover for your car belongs under your car insurance.
Understand exceptions and limits
Damage to borrowed items, damage between household members or damage during a particular activity may require attention to a specific provision. The precise outcome varies by policy and event. A general list of examples may therefore be misleading. Ask for an explanation of the terms applying to your insurance and keep that version with your policy schedule. Comparing premiums alone does not tell you how these situations are handled.
Record the facts when damage occurs
Record what happened and use the online claims portal to report it. Follow the instructions and retain relevant information. Do not promise that the insurer will definitely pay; cover and liability need to be assessed. If you have questions about the process or your policy, contact RFD.
If you want to review your insurance beforehand, discuss your household and the risks you are unsure about. This general information is not a legal opinion on liability or confirmation of cover.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as third-party insurance for my car?
No. Personal liability insurance has a different context from motor liability cover. For car questions, review your car insurance.
Is every loss I cause paid for?
No. Legal liability, the insured situation, exclusions and other policy terms must be assessed.
Are my children automatically insured?
Your policy states who is covered. Your household circumstances and any conditions for children living away from home must be reviewed.
Does my personal policy cover a business activity?
Do not assume so. Explain in which capacity the activity takes place and have the appropriate insurance or services identified for that question.
This is general information, not personal insurance advice or confirmation of insurance cover. What is suitable and covered depends on your circumstances and the policy terms. Read the disclaimer.
